The short answer is, just like an electro magnet. My name is John and I have been in the air cleaning industry long enough to know that the best option for air purification is the whole house type. Generally, most people have some sort of central heating and cooling system that is forced air. There are two types of electronic air cleaners currently available. The first type is what you might call the EPA-type electronic air cleaner. These are also called electronic precipitators. The air cleaner has a charging section that charges the particles as they enter and a collector section made up of metal plates that are oppositely charged, to collect the particles. The downside to this method is the production of ozone. By virtue of their design, they produce ozone in uncontrollable amounts. This is what the EPA doesn’t like. Unfortunately, the EPA has lumped all electronic air cleaners into this one category and has disapproved of their use.
The second type of electronic air cleaner uses a media pad to collect the particles. They are called Polarized Media electronic air cleaners. Most of them use some variation of fiberglass as the pad and some incorporate a carbon sheet in the core to help with odors. This design is not capable of producing ozone, as there is no metal on metal contact. The technology used in this method of air purification is simple, like an electro magnet. The media is charged with a positive charge and the particles, which are naturally negatively charged, are attracted to the media. Once a particle is captured, it acts as a conductor to capture the next particle, like a chain of paperclips on a magnet. The efficiencies achieved by this technology are comparable to HEPA filters in most cases.
